What the job involves
Most tree felling jobs are really about what you can't do, not what you can. You can't fell it towards the house. You can't drop it on the garage. You can't let it swing into the fence on the way down. The skill is in reading the site. The lean, the timber weight, the drop zone options, the rigging points. Then planning the job around what's actually there, not the version of the garden you wish you had.
- Look at the tree, the lean, the site, and what's in the way, before anyone picks up a chainsaw
- Decide: straight fell, sectional dismantle, or rigged takedown, based on what the site will actually allow
- Set up drop zones, rigging, and ground crew positions before the first cut
- Work through the tree in sections where needed, lowering heavy timber rather than dropping it
- Clear timber and brash and leave the site tidy, stump grinding available as the next step
A large boundary oak was leaning toward a conservatory with no usable drop zone on either side. The job became a full sectional dismantle, pieces lowered in stages, one tie-in point at a time, until the site was clear and the conservatory was unscathed. The owner said afterwards she'd been worrying about it for two years.
